Girls Hockey v Nailsea
Girls show real grit & determination in hard fought hockey fixtures
Wednesday 1st March
Year 7
Disappointingly Nailsea could not field a year 7 team, so the opportunity was taken to bring the Year 7 squad to the artificial pitch for a training session and despite a number of girls not being able to make the session, 15 girls turned out for the game.
Usually playing indoors on a polished surface or on the courts, it was a treat for the girls to play competitively on a real surface. All players were able o use the skills and tactics they have been developing in lessons and practice in real game scenarios and this certainly benefited a number of the girls. Noticeable performances were the defensive trio of Evie Dexter, Sophie Weaden and Asha Storer, who linked exceptionally well, creating a great triangle and moving the ball successfully across the pitch.
The year 7’s next face Broadoak in next week’s fixture.
Year 8
St Kath’s: 0 –1: Nailsea
St Kath’s Yr 8 Hockey Team started this fixture strongly, against a good Nailsea side, who were experienced in playing on their home synthetic pitch.
The team created lots of attacking opportunities, especially down the left-hand side of the pitch. The midfield linked particularly well with the forwards who were running onto through-balls really nicely.
In defence, the team moved the ball away from danger very well and passed accurately to the left and right of midfield. Players worthy of note were: Amelie for her low solid tackling, Molly for linking between defence and attack, Freya’s running off the ball and use of space, finally Beth in goal for a very good performance. This match was close and on another day, the victory could easily be ours. Well Done Girls !!
Year 9
St Kath’s: 0 – 1: Nailsea
In miserable conditions the Year 9 squad faced a Nailsea side who fielded a number of players with significant club experience. Despite the strength of the Nailsea side, the game was well matched and the midfield and defence of St Kath’s worked extremely hard to regain possession of the ball. Grace Brown had a fantastic game in defence, consistently clearing the ball from the line and helping keeper, Ruby Webber. Her hit out’s were also strong and well directed and allowed the girls to create attacking chances. Maisy Atkins and Izzy Fielden provided defence support for Grace, whilst Stella Crocker and Lucie Robertshaw battled hard in midfield to create attacking chances. Some great play by Stella, released Freya Barnett, who passed a number of Nailsea defenders and nearly put Ellie McCarthy in on goal.
Despite the attacking chances, the Nailsea side dominated possession, and a goal was inevitable, with Ruby being frequently tested. A strong shot by the striker from Nailsea was almost saved, but trickled over the line, to give Nailsea the only goal of the game and the victory. Player of the match was voted as Ruby Webber in goal, for her fine saves and keeping the scoresheet low.
