Girls Hockey v Clevedon
Key stage 3 girls face Clevedon in trio of hockey fixtures
Wednesday 8th February
Year 7
St Katherine’s 0 – 3 Clevedon
In freezing conditions, the Year 7 St Kath’s team faced a well drilled Clevedon side. With unusually large goals there was plenty of goal for both teams to aim for, but also to defend. The defence of Chloe Weaden, Sophie Weaden and Ellie Ojo worked hard, under lots of pressure, but linked well with the midfield. Isobel Taylor played well on the right and linked well with both forwards, Izzy Prime and Millie McLoughlin. Jolie Breakwell was solid in the middle with an excellent work rate and tackle count, also linking well with Ella on the left. The St Kath’s side created a few chances, but the Clevedon defence were up to the test and blocked shots well. Unfortunately with more possession it was inevitable that Clevedon would take the lead and eventually won the game 3 – 0. Player of the match was voted as Ellie Ojo.
Year 8
St Katherine’s 0 – 5 Clevedon
It was a chilly but clear afternoon and the girls were eager to get started.
It took the first half of the match for the St Katherine’s to get their eye in, which was reflected in the score line, with us being 4-0 down. Due to renewed determination in the second half and a sudden surge of pace, from all players, the team discovered a more competitive attitude and fought much harder to win and retain the ball.
Despite Clevedon being a strong and quick side, St Katherine’s defence produced some very outstanding tackling and defensive skills throughout the game. As much of the first half was played in our defensive half, Chantelle, Molly and Beth work consistently to keep Clevedon out of the ‘D’.
The St Katherine’s forward line went from strength to strength, and despite a slightly dozy start, play improved as the match progressed. The midfield players, Grace, Leah and Anida linked up nicely with Amelie, who was playing as a lone forward, resulting in scoring opportunities.
Well done to the team for their determination and positive attitude throughout the match. Congratulations must go to Grace Newby for being nominated players’ play by Clevedon.
Year 9
St Katherine’s 0 – 1 Clevedon
With a large number of absences, the 6 year 9 players had to be bolstered with the Year 8 players, who had already played in the first games. The Clevedon side started well and the first half could best be described as played in the St Kath’s defensive end. Ruby Webber was excellent in goal and despite huge amounts of pressure in the penalty area, made some key saves. The defence also worked hard to get the ball to the midfield and Niamh Scanlan made excellent ground down the right hand channel. At half time, the score was 1 – 0 to Clevedon. In the second half, the St Kath’s side had settled into their positions and began to pass the ball around with much more confidence and purpose. Lucie Robertshaw and Jazzy Pither linked well with Ellie McCarty down the left and managed to create some attacking opportunities for the attacking line. The score remained 1- 0 to Clevedon and player of the match was voted as Ruby Webber.
