11 Girls Netball Tournament
Success in final netball tournament for St Kath’s girls
Having won the plate competition last year the girls were hopeful for a good performance in the North Somerset tournament, held at Backwell on Thursday 9th March, however the competition was strong and was going to be a really competitive event.
In the first game the girls faced Backwell, the height difference was considerable and the girls were slow of the mark against a rapid Backwell side. The game was extremely fast paced and both sides had plenty of chances to score. The Backwell defence managed to block most of the shots by Maddie Watts and Morgan McDonnel limiting the St Kath’s score. Maddie Watts was voted as player of the match for her great movement and work in the circle, with the final score being a 8 – 1 loss.
Nailsea were the next opponents and having recently defeated them in a fixture the girls were slightly complacent at the start and went 0 – 2 behind. After a stern chat at half time the girls managed to regain control of the game and slowly started to build up a number of goals. Ashleigh Wills and Eve Wilson linked well in the middle and provided great links between defence to attack. Oona Chanfi was voted as player of the match and the final score was a 4-2 victory.
In the next game the girls faced Gordano. The game got off to a slow start in terms of scoring, with Gordano applying lots of pressure on the defence, but Athea Heavens and Freya Gorely rising tho the challenge. Eventually the deadlock was broken and Gordano in the second half began to amount a lead from the 3 – 2 half time score to an eventual 9 – 4 win for them. Maddie Watts was voted as player of the match.
Clevedon, a side the girls had recently lost to were the next opponents and they put up a strong challenge. Both sides had plenty of chances and the ball was end to end. Antonia Khalif worked hard to keep possession and they were always in touch of each others score. The St Kath’s side eventually edged a 2 goal lead only for Clevedon to come back strong in the final minute. The St Kath’s girls hung on for a satisfying 5-4 victory and player of the match was voted a Maddie Watts.
Finally the girls faced Priory, who were hoping to win the tournament overall. The game was extremely fast paced but off the back of their last win the girls played with confidence and at half time had a 3 – 0 lead. Knowing the Priory side would come back strong, the second half was all about hanging on and the girls were strong in defence and conceded only 2 goals, giving them a perhaps surprising but thoroughly deserved win 3 – 2, again player of the match was voted as Maddie Watts.
