10 Girls Netball Tournament
End of season tournament for Year 10 side
In gale like conditions, it certainly not good playing conditions for the county tournament held at Worle School on Thursday 23rd March. Plagued by absence and injury the St Kath’s side travelled down to Weston to face local school in a 12 team competition.
St Kath’s 6 – 2 Nailsea
In their opening game, they faced Nailsea school, a team the girls had beaten in a recent fixture but also with a very different line up. Knowing the Nailsea side had strength in the Goal attack position, it was left to Bo Marshall to play GD and limit the Nailsea chances. Backed up well by Hannah Chapman the defence of St Kath’s held out well and gave plenty of possession to the attack of Lauren Dun and inured Lexie Fitzgerald, playing not in her usual C position but in GS. Lexie was on target with her shooting and along with Lauren pulled out a good lead in a short period. This gave St Kath’s the victory 6 – 2 and player of the match was voted as Lexie.
St Kath’s 2 – 5 Worle
Facing Worle was an unknown game for both sides, as they haven’t faced each other for at least 2 years. This lead to an unusual start where both sides took few risks and the ball remained in the centre third. Georgia Bennett moved back to her usual GD position and was joined by Louise Thomas as GK. As the game progress, so did the pace and the Worle side managed the windy conditions well, whereas the long balls of St Kath’s were being blown wayward in the air. The St Kath’s side was without chances and both Bo Marshall and Lexie Fitzgerald worked hard to provide them, however the Worle side edged the game at 2 – 5 and player of the match was voted as Lauren Dun.
St Kath’s 6 – 4 Churchill
This was a game full of errors from both sides as conditions continued to get worse, with balls going out of court on plenty of occasions. Faith Clarke worked hard as WA to feed the ball to the shooting duo of Bo and Lauren alongside Lexie and continued despite a collision with fellow team mate Lauren. The game was best described as frantic and with Georgia off injured Hannah and Louise doubled up as the defensive duo, supported well by Meg Griffiths. At the final whistle, the girls were relieved to see the score was a victory to them at 6 – 4 and player of the match was voted as Bo Marshall.
St Kath’s 2 – 4 Sidcot
In their final game the girls faced Sidcot who they had narrowly beaten in their last fixture, with a very different line up. The Sidcot side were keen to make up for their recent loss and started well, gaining a 2 goal lead. Both sides had possession and both defences were tested and attacks given plenty of chances. The main game changer was the speed of the Sidcot passing, against the lofted passes of St Kath’s, which would normally work well, but in these conditions were drifting out of court or into Sidcot hands. A disappointing finish to the last game with 4 – 2 loss and player of the match was voted as Bo Marshall.
